Statement of Responsibility

The concept of transplant doulas is brand new. Because of this, we aim to lay the right foundation and assume radical responsibility for how the model of care is presented.

In the landscape of modern healthcare, where the journey of organ transplantation can be arduous and emotionally charged, the role of the transplant doula has emerged as a valued source of support and guidance for patients, living organ donors, and their care circles. But it’s important to acknowledge that our responsibility as the pioneers behind this brand-new model of care goes beyond the confines of conventional doula support.

Laying the Right Foundation

The Transplant Doula™ sets the highest possible standards as a baseline for transplant doula work. Because we want to see every transplant patient, living organ donor, and their care circles experience the profound benefits of having a transplant doula by their side, we prioritize quality training and ongoing refinement of our content so that every transplant doula can be confident in their ability to show up in the most meaningful ways. A rising tide truly lifts all boats.

Advocating for a Paradigm Shift in Transplant Care

We are working diligently to present the concept of transplant doulas to healthcare institutions, policymakers, community organizations, and transplant industry leaders in an effort to advocate for a paradigm shift in transplant care—one that prioritizes the holistic, non-medical well-being of transplant patients, living organ donors, and their care circles.

Breaking Down Barriers to Accessibility, Inclusion, Equality, and More

By actively promoting DEI principles in the solid organ transplant field, we can help break down systemic barriers and work to dismantle the prejudice and disparities that still persist. Regardless of their background, identity, or circumstances, everyone deserves equal access to organ transplantation and/or the freedom to be a living organ donor. We are committed to advocating for our clients and all transplant patients and donors in this matter. As an organization, we are also dedicated to fostering inclusivity and respect for all individuals. We firmly reject any form of discrimination based on belief systems, opinions, or approaches. And together, we’ll work tirelessly to create pathways for underserved populations within the transplant community.

Committing to Informed Education

Informed education is another cornerstone of our responsibility. Just as advocates for social justice emphasize the importance of awareness and understanding, we are committed to continuous learning. We stay abreast of the latest research, ethical considerations, and cultural sensitivities relevant to the transplant journey. Our dedication to informed education ensures that we can provide evidence-based and culturally sensitive training.

Subscribing to Brave Spaces‚ NOT Safe Spaces

The Transplant Doula™ assumes radical responsibility for fostering brave spaces for our members to show up in. We believe the term “safe space” is misleading, as we cannot guarantee that our community offers a safe space for anyone. We can, however, guarantee that we will hold our members responsible for cultivating “safety” within themselves through proper emotional regulation and energetic hygiene, clear and kind communication, and by extending same non-judgment we practice as doulas for one another.
