What is a Transplant Doula?
Transplant doulas provide holistic, non-medical support across practical, emotional, physical, spiritual, educational, and advocational matters for those facing chronic illness—including but not limited to organ failure, organ transplant, organ donation, and beyond.
Scope of Practice
The concept of companionship before, during, and after transplant is brand new to the organ failure world. The Transplant Doula™ recognizes the role of transplant doulas as valuable team members for organ transplant patients and their care circles.
We have developed this Scope of Practice to illustrate how a transplant doula provides physical, emotional, practical, spiritual, and educational support to patients and their families through organ failure, organ transplant, or organ donation.
Code of Ethics
The Transplant Doula™ is an educational, researched-based, professional organization whose members learn the skills and confidence needed to work as transplant doulas in various settings and serve in multiple capacities. At the heart of this work is a professional relationship that supports diverse individuals and groups with matters of organ failure, organ transplant, and organ donation via a wide range of non-medical support services.
There is no definitive list of services and no fee schedule. However, all transplant doulas professionally trained by The Transplant Doula™ program agree to follow this code of ethics, which establishes guidelines for behavior and priorities for professional work and sets expectations for the principles honored in the relations with patients, other transplant team members, and community.
Choosing a Transplant Doula
This guide gives you insights into what transplant doulas do, how they can help, and key considerations for selecting the right one for your specific needs.
For Transplant Doulas
The Sustainable Transplant Doula Business
Often you’ll hear doulas say, “If there’s a way to build a sustainable livelihood doing this full-time, I haven’t figured it out yet.”
The truth is that “full-time doula work” doesn’t look like what most people envision. It takes clarity around who you’re supporting, how you’re supporting them, and what “sustainable” actually means in your life. It takes diversification of income because relying on one-on-one client support does not provide the financial and energetic stability we actually want.
So we train our doulas to take a proactive approach to sustainable doula business building.
Is Certification Necessary?
The Transplant Doula™ is pioneering a new use for doula support, launching the first and only program of its kind in 2023. We’ve set high standards for our training, driven by our passion for supporting those in need. However, there are currently no certifying bodies or established education standards for transplant doulas. While we offer an in-house completion package that includes a certificate, it is not required to practice.
